Happy mother

The past year and a half my daughter didn't want to wear my knitting anymore. The last knitting project, a beaded dress, she only wanted to wear at  "zaandag" (zonday), smart thinking of a six years old!

But . . . a few weeks ago she asked: "Mummy, will you knit something for me?" She doesn't have to ask twice!

This very soft yarn turned out to be perfect to convince her for sure! Zonday doesn't exist anymore; she does know every day of the week again. Now the trouble is to get the cardigan off of her and in the washing machine.

So a second cardigan had to be made:

She loves it!

The thirth project is in progress already: a soft summer ice blue sweater, in a sieve cloth stitch.

And many growing/knitting years to come . . .

Just a little bit

Ufo's all over the place here, and still can't stop knitting. It's just the way I work: knitting a lot and once in a while finishing the whole heap.

Still alive and knitting, but you'll have to wait for some pictures.

I'm very busy knitting and finishing projects, and making a data base of all the patterns I have. Started yesterday, documented over 1.000 now, lots of thousands to go. And when I'm finished doing that, I finally can find the right patterns for thousand skeins. Nice!

What to do?

Knitting the short cardigan from Drops Design is lovely to do, but at the same time I discovered I knit better then I calculate. I'm short of yarn in the brown color, so I have to decide whether I use another color in the sleeves, or I'll make it a cardigan with very short sleeves.

Thinking it over I show you the patches so far, and the two colors. Maybe the soft green will be nice to combine, with soft green buttons and a crochet flower or so?

Back in the knitting scene

After a few very interesting and busy weeks at work, I'm back knitting enthousiastic as before. This is my new project (free patern from Drops Design). I'm using the 100% merinos I frogged at November the 17th, and I think it's going to be lovely. Very soon I'll show some pictures.

Something blue

Many days go by without knitting. If you told me this a few weeks ago, I wouldn't believe you. But sometimes things happen along the way that make a big difference. Good things.

I managed to finish one small project: the shawl.

Knitting genetics

Last Tuesday the Bergere yarn was delivered. Wednesday I started knitting the bolero for my mother. I like this yarn.

The bolero has to be knitted in 7 parts, and it's a whole new challenge for me (1 back, 2 sleeves, 2 fronts, 1 separate cabled edge, and another separate edge that has to be sewed on in backstitch). 2008 Is the year of fearless knitting, so where I'd put away the pattern in the past, now I'm just going to do it. Fingers crossed!

Another project on the needles is a scarf for a monkey (not a real one, just a stuffed animal). And it's going fabulous:

We started at 5, when she wanted to learn how to knit like mom. And today, she's 6 years and nearly 2 months old now, she wanted to make a new start. And we're very proud to see she's knitting one stitch after another.

Her brother (8 years old) trowed in the towel for now. He used his yarn for a tinkering project (a lot of hair for a puppet with a sponge head). No picture available, because it's departed this earth already.

Waiting for the ordered yarn to arrive (Bergere de Nord Magic, colour Glacier, for my mom's bolero), two knitting projects were started in the new year. Knit-addict? Moi?

A little top for a little girl

and a shawl for the same little princess. Yarn is mysteriously moving from the attic to her room. She'll need a bigger wardrobe soon.

Moodboard

Today I made a moodboard of nice photographs from the site of Drops Design and some yarn. It gets a place in our bedroom, right above the yarncabinet with transparent drawers. A few of the first things to see when I open my eyes. I think it's very cheerful.

Saved this oldy

Today we had to get rid of some mess at the garbage dump. Next to it, there is a second hand shop. We decided to have a look, and there it was . . .

This old sewing cabinet. I was very surprised to see that even the (also very old) contents were still there. I get a little sentimental thinking whose possessions these were. What was her story? I'll never know.

I took it home, cleaned it, polished it softly with wax. Superman did some repairs. We'll give it a prominent place in the living, and I'm definitely going to use it.

Thanks, unknown granny. We will take good care of your inheritance.

In between

Because I can't stop knitting I had to find a new project between the last finished (Superman's collar; that was already an "in between") and the next (mother's bolero). Still waiting for some answers from my mother about colour and so on, before I can order the yarn at M+M Wolpost.

I found  a nice pattern. And a nice yarn of course in my stash. A perfect fast project for the Holidays: a Sweet Candy Cardigan for T. Knitted the back in almost one evening, so it's going to be a quicky.

Schachenmayr Nomotta Storia, colour(s) 80. So nice to see all the colours slip through your fingers while knitting. Like it. Daughter likes it too.

Nothing to be proud of . . . or?

Well, I have to say, this piece of knitting isn't really something to be proud of. Though . . . it has some importance.

Superman doesn't like scarfs. He sure doesn't like the loose ends of scarfs blowing into his face during saving the world from all kinds of dangers. Or . . . during biking to his day job in the nearest village. Whatever. He wants Lois to knit him a collar.

She likes to get a little credit for a safer world today.

Don't worry, she doesn't want to strangle him. It's very elastic.

Another FO to show

Feeling pretty good about me finishing things one after another.

Made with a lot of love, and if I had cursed a little bit less at the collar, I sure have had some wings at my back by now. Blew those ugly words away with the last stitches. Rests: a lovely blue Irish sweater for my daughter.

And mom's going to bed with a serene smile. Nighty.

Fluffy FO!

It's green,  long,  soft,  fluffy, warm, and perfect for cocooning:

This one was very easy to make. And the yarn made it very pleasant too (Lana Grossa Nuovo - 76% merinos/24% polyamide). I love it!

The things we do for yarn

Very soon after I decided I first had to try to knit me a way through my stash before buying more yarn, I have to admit I'm inveterate.

So proudly and with a big smile I present this yarn-to-fall-in-love-with: Lana Grossa Fumo! It's a chunky yarn with 29% merino extrafine and 20% kid mohair in it. Very soft, and only 8 lots needed for a sweater (European I wish I had that) size 38/40. And look: even the reindeer get a smile on their face!

I bought 20 pieces in orange and 19 in dark-red. Love them both, though especially the orange steels my heart.

Now I really have to make some space. And add it to my list (or I'll loose track with 857 lots and half a sheep at the attic).

Hectic times / Drukke tijden

The past weeks we were very busy with all sorts of happenings and parties; a very lovely but hectic time of the year. Our daughter turned 6 and wise: she's almost the oldest child in her class, and that makes her PROUD! We gave several parties, also an old-fashioned birthday party at home with 8 children.

Our eight year old judoka won a silver medal at his first tournament, so he's very, very proud too!

And then, every year in November/December we see a lot of an old man with a very long white beard: Sinterklaas. After a few weeks of restless, nervous children I'm really glad he packed his bags and moved back to Spain.

My knitting project is almost finished; here is the result of knitting the Aran sweater with another yarn (it's the same yarn as the scarf, hat and mittens; other colour though).

De laatste weken waren wij druk met allerlei gebeurtenissen en feestjes; een hele leuke maar ook hectische tijd van het jaar. Onze dochter werd 6 en wijs: ze is bijna de oudste van haar klasje. Ze straalt van trots! We hebben verschillende feestjes gegeven, waaronder een ouderwets kinderfeestje thuis met 8 kinderen.

Onze achtjarige judoka won een zilveren medaille op zijn eerste tournooi, dus hij is ook trots!

En dan nog: ieder jaar in november/december zien we veel van een oude man met een lange witte baard: Sinterklaas. Na een paar weken van nervous rondspringende kinderen ben ik echt blij dat hij zijn boeltje heeft gepakt en weer naar Spanje is teruggekeerd.

Een breiproject is bijna klaar: hier het resultaat van de Aran trui met ander garen (hetzelfde als dat van de sjaal, muts en mitaines; alleen een andere kleur).

In the mean time I couldn't keep my hands off of this yarn. It's going to be a beautiful green, soft, fluffy . . . to be continued.

Ondertussen kon ik mijn handen niet van dit garen afhouden. Het wordt een mooie, groene, zachte, fluffy . . . wordt vervolgd.

What a pity / Jammer

This is the start of a wonderful Aran (Irish) sweater for (again) my daughter. Everything is just right. The 100% lovely merinos wool matches exactly with the pattern, the yarn is soft and the stitches are very expressive.

But . . . what I knew from the beginning: I haven't got enough yarn. In spite of this presumption I started knitting like a maniac, as if that makes up for the lack of wool! Duh! I hesitated if I would make it a sweater with short sleeves, but no, I have to pull it out.

I'm going to search for other yarn, because the pattern is so lovely and nice to knit, and it looks so beautiful.

Dit is het begin van een geweldige Aran-trui voor (alweer) mijn dochter. Alles klopt. De 100% merinoswol die precies uitkomt met het aantal steken en naalden, zodat er niet omgerekend hoeft te worden, het materiaal is zacht en de steken komen er heel plastisch mee uit.

Maar wat ik eigenlijk vanaf het begin wel wist: ik heb niet genoeg wol. Tegen beter weten in toch gaan breien, alsof je het tekort aan wol kan inhalen of zo! Nog even getwijfeld er een truitje met korte mouwtjes van te maken, maar nee, toch maar uithalen.

Op zoek dus naar ander materiaal, want het patroon is echt heel leuk om te doen en het ziet er mooi uit. Ik denk alleen dat ik in de nieuwe poging de gerstekorrel aan weerszijden vervang door averechte tricotsteek. De gerstekorrel trekt alles een beetje in elkaar in de lengte.

Het truitje met bandeau! Erg leuk om te maken, en klaar voordat je het weet.

Gradually I'm convincing myself that this is really getting ridiculous. Maybe I have to start my own yarn shop?

I go to confession:

Ik raak er zo langzamerhand zelf ook wel van overtuigd dat het belachelijke vormen begint aan te nemen. Misschien moet ik maar eens een wolwinkel beginnen.

Met erg veel plezier ben ik aan dit truitje begonnen.

The yarn of Scheepjes Country is a composition of 50% virgin wool / 50% acrylic and gives a very strong shape. A whole different yarn than used in the original (Phildar) pattern, but I think it's going to be beautiful.

P.S: The Drops-dress (31-10-2007) will have to wait. I don't have the right yarn yet, and I'm doubtful of knitting around or flat.

Het materiaal Scheepjes Country heeft een samenstelling van 50% scheerwol / 50% polyacryl en is goed vormvast. Een heel ander materiaal dan in het patroon (van Phildar) wordt gebruikt, maar volgens mij wordt het erg mooi.

P.S: Het Drops-jurkje (zie patroon in bericht van 31-10-2007) moet dus nog even wachten; daarvoor heb ik ook nog geen materiaal in huis. Zit nog te twijfelen of ik het jurkje toch maar op een rondbreinaald ga proberen. Zo'n werkstuk zonder naden heeft ook zijn voordelen!

Knitting on request / Breien op verzoek

"Mummy, my baby is cold. Will you knit her a sweater?"

The pleasure of knitting this sweater was only in seeing the happy face of the doll's mother. Real fiddle twiddle!

"Mam, mijn baby heeft het koud. Wil je een trui voor haar breien?"

Het plezier van dit truitje zat alleen in het blije snoetje van de poppenmoeder. Wat een gefriemel!

One Ufo less / Ufootje minder

Ah, another sweater made of a lot of patches. I started this knitting project during our summer holiday, and finally it's finished.

As long as she likes it, my daughter frequently gets knitted articles of cloting.

Her brother hates it! Knitted sweaters are not "vet cool" (translation: fat cool).  With a little melancholy I think at the good old times, when he loved my Irish and camouflage sweaters.

Ha, weer een trui gemaakt van een hoopje lapjes. Dit breisel afgelopen zomer gemaakt op de camping (ook daar naar toe gaat alles mee). En eindelijk zit het in elkaar.

Zolang zij het nog leuk vindt, krijgt mijn dochter met enige regelmaat nieuwe zelfgebreide kledingstukken.

Haar broer moet er niet aan denken! Gebreide truien zijn niet vet cool, dus daar hoef je bij hem niet mee aan te komen. Een beetje weemoedig denk ik terug aan de tijd dat hij het geweldig vond om een nieuwe Ierse trui of camouflagetrui te krijgen. Misschien ooit nog eens . . . ?

The original pattern was for a boy's sweater, but I like it for a girl too. And with these nice colours there is nothing boyish about it.

Het patroon was eigenlijk voor een jongenstrui, maar ik vond hem ook wel stoer voor een meisje. En met deze kleurtjes is er ook niks jongensachtig meer aan.

And the little lady is happy; she wants to wear it to school tomorrow.

En de dame in kwestie is blij; ze wil hem morgen naar school aan.

Finished! / Klaar!

It was really a pity I wasn't able to go to the national Stitch-n-Bitch meeting in Rotterdam today. It just didn't fit with all the plans and obligations, and with a little sadness I skipped this one.

On the other hand I had some spare time today: the green cardigan is finished. It's a little different from the original pattern (25-10-2007).

In a local shop I found the perfect buttons and a nice little rose to complete it.

Ik vond het erg jammer dat ik vandaag niet naar de SnB-dag in Rotterdam kon. 't Kwam gewoon niet goed uit met andere plannen, en met een beetje pijn in het hart heb ik het maar laten varen.

Aan de andere kant had ik vandaag wel wat tijd over en: het groene vestje is klaar. Het is wel iets anders geworden dan het origineel. In een fourniturenzaak vond ik precies de goede knopen en nog een leuk roosje om het geheel af te maken.

It was a real nice address. A lot of lovely stuff, and it isn't even yarn!

These I couldn't leave there. The little doll has a future ahead of a brooch for my daughter. The ribbon can be used complete, or cut in pieces.

En ik heb er weer een leuk adresje bij. De grens kan nog best een beetje verlegd worden van alle soorten wol naar knopen, leuke applicaties, lintjes, en meer van dat spul.

Deze kon ik niet laten liggen. Van het poppetje maak ik met een speldje een broche voor mijn dochter. De lintjes kunnen in z'n geheel, maar de bloemetjes kunnen ook losgeknipt gebruikt worden.

Long live Marktplaats. Bought this book for a few euro's. It's from 1985 and about design en inspiration. Nice!

Lang leve Marktplaats. Voor een paar euri gescoord. Het boek is uit 1985 en gaat over ontwerpen en inspiratie. Leuk!

Oops . . . I did it again

Last weekend my hubby and I went a nice weekend out without the kids. Lots of time to shop, with the following results.

Afgelopen weekend zijn manlief en ik er heerlijk een paar dagen tussenuit geweest. De kindertjes mochten bij opa en oma logeren. Ineens heel veel tijd om in alle rust te winkelen, met onder andere het volgende resultaat.

This is really a great book. If you have a passion for knitting, if you love beautiful pictures, inspiring patterns, ideas and creative exercises, just buy it! It contains nice quotes about creativity, courage and frontier knitting.  Turn over the leaves, and you get a warm heart and itchy hands!

Dit is echt een geweldig boek. Voor als breien inderdaad je passie is, als je houdt van mooie foto's, inspirerende patronen, ideeen en creatieve oefeningen. In het hele boek komen ook nog mooie citaten voor over creativiteit, durf en grenzen verleggen. Doorbladeren, lezen, en je houdt er een warm hart en jeukende handen aan over!

This book is more practical than the foregoing, but because of that not less inspiring! Lots of creative ideas that go further than you can find in the standard knitting books. Therefor also a recommend for your collection.

Dit boek is wat praktischer dan het voorgaande, maar daardoor niet minder inspirerend! Met creatieve ideeen die veel verder gaan dat wat te vinden is in de standaard boeken over breien. Daarom ook een aanrader voor de verzameling!

At a shop in Zierikzee they have a sales of pattern books, prices only 1 euro a piece. Also books of 2006/2007. Like it!

In de Singer-winkel in Zierikzee staat op het moment een grote bak vol met patroonboeken voor 1 euro per stuk. Ook uitgaven van begin seizoen 2006/2007. Er kan nog meer bij!

At the end of the weekend my sister gave me another bag full of knitting magazines. She quitted knitting and asked me if I? Mwah . . . it never stops!

Aan het eind van het weekend gaf mijn zus mij nog een tas vol breibladen. Zij was ermee gestopt en of ik nog? Mwah . . .  Het houdt nooit op!

This is a part of my Ufo's (there are more, hiding at the attic). Will be finished in the near future, I think . . .

Dit is een deel van mijn ufo's (er houden zich nog meer schuil op zolder). Worden binnen afzienbare tijd in elkaar gezet, denk ik . . .

A sweater for my daughter. Pink-white-orange cotton mix.

Truitje voor mijn dochter. Rose-wit-oranje gemeleerd katoen.

50% cotton / 50% wool. Blue in the daylight, in the evening the yarn gets a purple glow.

Very beautiful stuff for a . . .

Heel mooi materiaal voor een . . .

Irish sweater with Tusinian neck and hood (pour moi).

Ierse trui met Tunesische hals en capuchon (pour moi).

This project is waiting for my ugly perfectionism to go away. Finishing this sweater the pattern of the hood wasn't stitched together completely symetric. Not a knitting problem, more a careless sewing item. Grrrr . . . I have to muster courage, undo, en begin all over again, or maybe accept that not everything can be perfect. Can't decide yet.

Dit werkstuk is in een hoek gesmeten omdat mijn akelig perfectionisme me in de weg zit. Bij het in elkaar naaien van de capuchon bleken achteraf de kabeltjes niet helemaal symetrisch tegenover elkaar te liggen. Grrrr . . . Dat wordt moed verzamelen, loshalen en opnieuw beginnen, of accepteren dat niet alles perfect is. Ben er nog niet uit.

Knitting Madness - Breigekte

Since 25 years I'm addicted to, almost obsessed with, knitting. Oldfashioned, dull? Certainly not! It's the ultimate way to relax en create the most beautiful things. I can't pass a yarnstore without looking, touching, buying, and everything that's woolly and colourful, makes me very happy.

I give you an impression of the madness . . .

Sinds 25 jaar heb ik een verslaving, neigend naar obsessie, die breien heet. Door velen ouderwets en truttig genoemd, whatever, lekker belangrijk, voor mij een heerlijke manier om te ontspannen en creatief bezig te zijn. Ik kan geen wolwinkel voorbij lopen en van alles wat wollig en kleurig is, word ik blij.

Hier een impressie van de gekte . . .

Meanwhile I collected more than 40 kg (more than 800 lots) of knitting yarn. My own yarnshop at the attic . . .

And a bookshelve full of books, magazines, designs, and so on.

Inmiddels heb ik meer dan 40 kg (ruim 800 bollen) aan breigarens verzameld. Een eigen wolwinkel op zolder dus.

En een kast vol boeken, bladen, ontwerpen, etc.
